Garage Theft is Getting Increasingly Common

By Eric Zwingel

Theft has always been an issue but most people don’t take precautions until it’s too late.

Theft is an issue anywhere and everywhere but Fargo has been victim of a recent string of garage break-ins. Unfortunately, I was a victim of one of these thefts. Although most of these thefts happened in apartment complexes, they can also happen at your home. How do they do it? It is actually extremely simple to accomplish if you have a garage door opener outside of your garage. Most people have the key pads and some people have the quarter turn key opener and this is the gateway to your garage for potential thieves. I will not go into details about how they did it because I don’t want the word to be spread of how it is done but I will give you a few hints on how to prevent this from happening to you.

Here are a few tips for you to prevent garage door break-ins:

  • Install a wireless keypad on your garage instead of a wired version.
  • Make the wires to your turn key opener or keypad extremely short so they break or cannot be pulled out if the unit is broken off.
  • Avoid any type of outside devices on your garage; just use the garage door openers in your cars.
  • Lock the door going into your house from the garage and lock your car. (Especially in apartments)
  • Install an Ignus surveillance system at your house or rental properties.

By employing even a few of these tips you should be able to ensure the safety of your personal items in your garage, your vehicles and your family.
