Gain Customer's Trust

By Avery Nubson

An SSL certificate for an online store is like a friendly smile for a brick and mortar business.

Many web users are concerned about the safety of their personal information; and with good reason. Web users are wary of internet fraud or identity theft and feel insecure about giving out personal data.

How can you assure your current and potential clients that your website is safe?
By purchasing and implementing a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate you gain your customer’s trust. You should consider purchasing an SSL certificate if your website does or contains any of the following:

  • Receives and processes credit card information via shopping cart and merchant account
  • Your website stores sensitive data and your customers are required to log in to input that data
  • You share internal confidential data over the internet
  • Your website must comply to any security or privacy requirements

The majority of websites will not require an SSL certificate; however banks that offer online banking, an eCommerce store or a web portal for business all should install one not only to protect your client’s data but yourself as well.

How does it work?
SSL certificates work by encrypting and decrypting information. When a user visits a website with an SSL certificate installed the secure sockets layer will communicate between the server and the web browser. This communication is created by using a unique session key, that guarantees their message is safe and secure.

How will my customers know if my website is secure?
Your customers can see that your website is secure by checking the browser. Different browsers display the security notice differently. Internet Explorer 7 will display a lock icon next to the navigation bar while Firefox will display a yellow navigation bar as well as a lock icon. Both browsers display “HTTPS” instead of “HTTP” in the navigation bar. Purchasing a certificate that allows you to add a Verisign logo to your site can also help visitors feel safe using your site. If your customers have questions about the security of your website educating them in this matter can help. Try adding a page with your web site’s security policy and explain which data or pages within your site are encrypted by SSL.

Where can I purchase an SSL certificate?
The experts at Ignus will be able to help your purchase and install the SSL certificate for your website. The SSL certificate expires on a yearly basis and requires renewal as long as you want to protect sensitive data. It’s important to gain and keep your customer’s trust and business by keeping your website safe, secure and loved with an SSL certificate.
